Pound South African Rand Exchange Rate Firms ahead of BoE Interest Rate Announcement
The Pound South African Rand (GBP/ZAR) exchange rate is trading with modest gains so far this morning as markets brace for the Bank of England’s (BoE) latest interest rate decision.
At the time of writing the Pound South African Rand exchange rate is trading at around ZAR20.8378, up roughly 0.2% from this morning’s opening rate.
Pound (GBP) to Soar on BoE’s Hawkish Forward Guidance?
The Pound (GBP) is on the rise this morning, in anticipation of an interest rate hike from the Bank of England as it concludes its first policy meeting of 2022.
The BoE is widely expected to raise interest rates from 0.25% to 0.50% this month as it seeks to tame inflation, which surged to a 30-year high of 5.4% in December.
This will be its second hike in as many meetings, following its surprise hike at the end of 2021.
However, with the hike having already been largely priced in by markets, any movement in the Pound this afternoon is more likely to be directed by the BoE’s forward guidance.
If the bank signals it will continue to tightening monetary policy aggressively through 2022 then GBP exchange rates are likely to surge. Alternatively, a more cautious outlook in light of the UK’s impending ‘cost-of-living crisis’ could see Sterling weaken.
On the other hand, should the BoE live up to its reputation as an ‘unreliable boyfriend’ and shock markets by leaving interest rates on hold then the Pound could nosedive.
South African Rand (ZAR) Weakens amid Power Cut Concerns
At the same time, the South African Rand (ZAR) is facing an uphill battle, following the announcement from state power utility Eskom that it will need to implement scheduled power cuts over the next few days amidst a shortage of capacity.
Also known as load shedding, these power cuts have plagued the country for years and are estimated to cost the South African economy roughly ZAR700million per day in lost output.
Elsewhere the Rand is also facing external headwinds as global risk appetite is suppressed by ongoing geopolitical tensions in Europe as well as uncertainty over how rising interest rates at most major central banks could impact the global economic recovery.
Pound South African Rand Exchange Rate Forecast: UK Political Uncertainty Remains a Risk for Sterling
Looking past the BoE rate decision, the end of the week could see the Pound South African Rand (GBP/ZAR) exchange rate infused with some volatility as a result of UK political headlines.
Despite his best efforts to divert attention elsewhere, the ‘partygate’ scandal continues to place significant pressure on Boris Johnson’s premiership, the uncertainty over which continues to cap the Pound’s upside potential.
At the same time, the Rand may remain on the defensive so long as a cautious market mood continues to prevail.
