Pound Australian Dollar (GBP/AUD) Firms Despite Mounting Growth Fears in UK
The Pound Australian Dollar (GBP/AUD) exchange rate is strengthening today despite a myriad of headwinds threatening the UK economy.
At time of writing, the GBP/AUD exchange rate is around $1.7430, a 0.20% jump from this morning’s opening levels.
Pound (GBP) Undermined by Financial Instability
The Pound (GBP) is finding modest demand today, but several headwinds are likely to keep a firm lid on any significant gains. Persistent concerns about the government’s fiscal policy and recession risks could continue to weigh on Sterling.
News of house prices having peaked, and a slowdown recruitment, could indicate the economy is on the turn. Meanwhile, business confidence is at its lowest level since the height of the Covid pandemic, with fears that the economy could remain weak until 2024. An in-depth assessment by Deutsche Bank warned that GDP will take until at least 2024 to return to pre-Covid levels.
Elsewhere, Brexit issues make a return to the fray as negotiations to the Northern Ireland protocol restarted yesterday. Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney met with Prime Minister Liz Truss but said he does not think an agreement can be reached by the end of the month. A potential trade war with the EU could well be on the cards if an amicable agreement cannot be reached.
Australian Dollar (AUD) Subdued amid Risk-Averse Markets
Meanwhile, the Australian Dollar (AUD) is struggling for demand amid global recession fears and geopolitical tensions.
With escalating tensions between Russia and the West, President Biden warns of Armageddon if Putin employs nuclear weapons. After Russia ‘annexed’ several regions of Ukraine, Putin has repeatedly warned of the use of nuclear weapons to defend attacks on Russia. Biden warns of the threat Putin poses:
‘For the first time since the Cuban Missile Crisis, we have a direct threat to the use of nuclear weapons, if in fact things continue down the path they’d been going.
‘We have not faced the prospect of Armageddon since Kennedy and the Cuban missile crisis.’
Meanwhile, not doing the ‘Aussie’ any favours is the dovish Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Their decision to slow the pace of policy tightening with a 25bps rate hike has weighed on AUD investors. However, the publishing of the RBA financial stability review highlighted the resilience of the Australian economy despite rising risks.
Pound Australian Dollar Exchange Rate Forecast: BoE Speech to Rally the Pound?
Looking ahead, the Pound Australian Dollar exchange rate could see further fluctuations as BoE Deputy Governor for Markets and Banking Dave Ramdsen is set to make a speech later this morning.
Meanwhile, the ever-developing situation in Ukraine could weigh further on market sentiment. Any negative headlines could see the risk-sensitive ‘Aussie’ retreat.
