Pound New Zealand Dollar (GBP/NZD) Exchange Rate Firms Despite Bleak Warnings of UK Economy

Pound New Zealand Dollar (GBP/NZD) Strengthens amid Souring Market Mood

The Pound New Zealand Dollar (GBP/NZD) exchange rate is climbing today despite another bleak assessment of the UK economy.

At time of writing, the GBP/NZD exchange rate is around $1.9783, a 0.34% jump from this morning’s opening levels.

Pound (GBP) Rallies Despite Persistent Concerns Over UK Growth

The Pound is finding renewed strength against many of its rivals today. Despite mounting concerns of the government’s fiscal policy, Sterling appears to be repositioning after substantial losses yesterday.

Weighing on the Pound are expectations that the UK economy is expected to take until at least 2024 to recover to the levels of pre-Covid. Deutsche Bank released a downbeat statement to coincide with sliding business confidence. Business leaders across the country have noted a substantial decline of economic indicators since the mini-budget meltdown.

Meanwhile, recruitment in the UK has slowed in September, highlighting the mounting economic problems. A report from KPMG shows growth in demand for hiring slowed for September to the lowest levels since February 2021. With an ever-weakening economic outlook, companies are becoming more cautious with recruitment.

Further weighing on the Pound is the return of Brexit woes. Prime Minister Liz Truss met with Irish Foreign Minister as negotiations on the Northern Ireland protocol resumed. However, Coveney has poured cold water on the hopes of finding an agreement on the bill. Ahead of the meeting, Coveney said there is a long way to go before an end to the controversial situation.

New Zealand Dollar (NZD) Under Pressure amid Risk-Averse Mood

The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is undermined by the waning global market sentiment. Recession fears and geopolitical tensions continue to sap demand for risk-sensitive currencies.

The OPEC+ decision on cutting production has weighed on global market sentiment. Fears of restricting supplies to the West whilst bolstering Russia’s war efforts with continued profits.

Meanwhile, President Biden has issued a stark warning as Putin’s nuclear threat has brought the world the closest to nuclear catastrophe since 1962. Biden has said that the threat of defeat could push Putin to use nuclear weapons. Global market sentiment is souring as geopolitical tensions are escalating.

Pound New Zealand Dollar Exchange Rate Forecast: Market Mood to Weigh on the Pound?

Looking ahead, the Pound New Zealand Dollar exchange rate could fluctuate with market sentiment alone. A lack of major data could see both Sterling and the ‘Kiwi’ exposed to domestic and global headwinds. Ongoing political volatility could weigh on the Pound.

Meanwhile, further developments in the Ukraine invasion could affect risk sentiment, and in turn the New Zealand Dollar.
