Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) Exchange Rate Fluctuates as BoE Rate Hike Expectations Decline
The Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate is trading in a narrow range this morning amid a lack of economic data. Softer-than-expected UK inflation continues to sap demand amid pared rate hike bets from the Bank of England (BoE).
At time of writing, the GBP/USD exchange rate is around $1.2042, relatively unchanged from this morning’s opening levels.
Pound (GBP) Undermined by Reduced Interest Rate Hike Bets
The Pound (GBP) is remaining quiet this morning as the markets continue to digest yesterday’s softer-than-expected inflation reading. Without any major economic data due out until tomorrow, Sterling has been left to trade on market sentiment.
Weighing on GBP investors this morning is the concern around a sooner-than-expected pause in the tightening cycle. With the Bank of England (BoE) already showing some caution surrounding future rate hikes, the latest CPI reading could signal an earlier pause. Economists at Commerzbank are warning that a more cautious rate outlook could see Sterling come under further pressure. They said:
‘At its last meeting, the BoE had already shown itself to be more cautious with regard to further interest rate hikes. The weaker inflation figures should be just what it needs to signal an early pause in interest rates. We, therefore, see the Pound rather on the weaker side.’
US Dollar (USD) Quiet ahead of Data Drop Flurry
Meanwhile, the US Dollar is also fairly subdued this morning but is holding onto many of its gains from yesterday’s rally in the wake of strong retail sales.
Against expectations of a 1.8% climb, retail sales in January surged by 3%. It signalled the biggest increase since March 2021 as consumer spending bounced back, pointing to a more robust economy. Ahead of a myriad of mid-tier economic data releases today, investors are waiting on the sidelines for any further hints on the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy.
Meanwhile, tensions between the US and China continue to fray as Washington accuses Beijing of using the balloons as surveillance. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has postponed a trip to China over the strained tensions. President Joe Biden is expected to make a speech later today to address the four spy balloons shot down over the US. If tensions continue to simmer, global market sentiment could waver.
Pound US Dollar Exchange Rate Forecast: BoE Speech to Spur Sterling?
Looking ahead, the Pound US Dollar exchange rate could see further movement with a speech from BoE Chief Economist Huw Pill. Pill recently commented that the BoE is more likely to raise interest rates than pause or cut them. GBP investors will be hoping he maintains this view.
Meanwhile, the ‘Greenback’ could look to the flurry of data releases for further hints at how the Fed will continue their tightening cycle. With producer price inflation expected to fall to 5.4% YoY, and weekly jobless claims to remain low, a continually robust economy could lift the ‘Greenback’.
