Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) Exchange Rate Fluctuates as BoE Hints at Further Hikes

Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) Wavers as BoE Remains Alert to Inflationary Pressures

The Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) exchange rate continues to trade erratically after a speech from Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey. Commenting that the central bank will be alert to persistent inflationary pressures, he added:

‘If they become evident, further monetary tightening would be required. MPC´s response will be firmly anchored in the emerging evidence. (However), evidence has pointed to more resilient activity in the economy.’

At time of writing, the GBP/EUR exchange rate is around €1.1381, relatively unchanged from this morning’s opening levels.

GBP/EUR Fluctuates amid Financial Sector Stability Concerns

The Pound Euro exchange rate is trading narrowly as volatility in the banking sector continues to spook investors.

At time of writing, the GBP/EUR exchange rate is around €1.1378, relatively unchanged from this morning’s opening levels.

Pound (GBP) Quiet amid Global Banking Fears

The Pound (GBP) is remaining relatively subdued this morning amid a lack of economic data. The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned about the threat to the world economy in the face of banking collapses.

The recent volatility in the financial sector risks financial stability, according to IMF head Kristalina Georgieva. The deadly cocktail of soaring interest rates, the war in Ukraine and the continued fallout of the pandemic, has put a great deal of stress on the global economy. Georgieva said:

‘At a time of higher debt levels, the rapid transition from a prolonged period of low interest rates to much higher rates – necessary to fight inflation – inevitably generates stresses and vulnerabilities, as evidenced by recent developments in the banking sector in some advanced economies.’

Euro (EUR) Undermined by Escalating Russian Aggression

Meanwhile, the Euro (EUR) is also struggling for demand. Tensions in the Ukraine invasion threaten to boil over once more. Vladimir Putin plans to station nuclear weapons in Belarus and likened the move to the US placing weapons in Europe.

NATO has condemned the move, citing it ‘dangerous and irresponsible’, and a threat to Russia’s commitment of reducing nuclear weapons. Despite the move not being surprising from Moscow, it signals one of Russia’s most aggressive moves in the conflict in regard to nuclear rhetoric. NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu said:

’NATO is vigilant and we are closely monitoring the situation. We have not seen any changes in Russia’s nuclear posture that would lead us to adjust our own.’

The Euro could slip further on fears of escalating conflict in the Ukraine invasion. It marks the first time since the mid-90s that Russia has stationed nuclear weapons outside its borders.

Pound Euro Exchange Rate Forecast: BoE Speech to Rally the Pound?

Looking ahead, the Pound Euro exchange rate could see further movement with a speech from Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey. Speaking at an event at the London School of Economics, the speech is part of a series on ‘understanding the UK economy’ and includes research on the global context of the economy and its future. Any further commentary on how the central bank intends to fight inflation could influence Sterling.

Meanwhile, the Euro could also look to speeches for further impetus. Bundesbank President Joaquim Nagel is due to speak this afternoon, and if they echo previous comments of how the European Central Bank’s (ECB) fight against inflation isn’t over, the Euro could climb.
