Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) Exchange Rate Trades Sideways in Absence of Data

Pound US Dollar Exchange Rate Fluctuates post Sunak Q&A

The Pound USD Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate is trading sideways today as limited data releases for both countries leave the currencies to be driven by market sentiment.

At the time of writing the GBP/USD exchange rate is trading at around $1.2454. Virtually unchanged from this morning’s opening rate.

Pound (GBP) Rangebound amid Sparse Data

The Pound (GBP) is trading in a narrow range against most other major currencies today, in the absence of any notable UK economic data.

Investors interest peaked this morning as British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak gave a speech to UK business leaders about the future of the British economy, claiming that the UK Government is here to listen to businesses.

Speaking at the Prime Minister’s first LinkedIn live Q&A, Sunak said:

‘[The] government’s got to keep pace with how the economy is changing. We don’t have this old linear model of people going from school to college, to university, to job for life. That’s not how it works anymore… We need to keep talking to businesses, identifying where the gaps are, and then finding innovative ways to fill them.’

Over the course of the event, GBP fluctuated, as Sunak faced criticism for not doing enough to support British businesses.

Chair of fashion group Burberry accused Sunak of an ‘own goal over’ his decision to remove VAT refunds for tourists.

US Dollar (USD) Muted ahead of High-Impact Data

The US Dollar (USD) is muted today as investors hold off major trades ahead of impactful US data releases later in the week. This includes the latest US GDP release and core PCE price index.

USD investors reluctance to make any aggressive bets leaves the ‘Greenback’ treading water, despite a broadly cautious market mood prevailing at the start of the week.

Also limiting demand for the US Dollar is a softening of US Treasury yields, which are dipping even with the market pricing in a 25bps rate hike by the Federal Reserve next month.

Pound US Dollar Exchange Rate Forecast: GBP/USD to Remain Muted until Mid-Week Data Releases?

Looking ahead to tomorrow, the Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate may remain trapped in a narrow range through the first half of the week.

The Pound in may struggle to find direction amid an extremely sparse UK data calendar. However, an upbeat market mood could lend some support to the increasingly risk-sensitive currency.

Meanwhile, investors may be reluctant to alter their positions in the US Dollar ahead of some high-impact US data releases in the latter half of the week.
