Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) Exchange Rate Wavers Ahead of ECB Rate Hike Decision

Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) Rangebound as Markets Brace for ECB Interest Rate Decision

(Updated 4/5/23, 8:45)

The Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) exchange rate remains in fluctuation this morning as EUR investors turn their attention to the European Central Bank (ECB) interest rate decision later today. With inflation softening but core inflation remaining sticky, the markets are expecting a modest 25bps rate hike, but a 50bps rise is still on the table. The Euro could soar if the central bank opts for the latter.

At time of writing, the GBP/EUR exchange rate is around €1.1360, relatively unchanged from this morning’s opening levels.

GBP/EUR Wavers Despite Tight Labour Market in the Euro Area

(Updated 3/5/23, 16:30)

The Pound Euro exchange rate is still struggling for a clear direction despite unemployment in the Eurozone edging lower than expected. The figure came in at 6.5%, marking the lowest figure on record, highlighting a tight labour market. Combined with high inflation, the latest data gives the European Central Bank (ECB) more breathing room for further tightening.

At time of writing, the GBP/EUR exchange rate is around €1.1347, relatively unchanged from this morning’s opening levels.

GBP/EUR Fluctuates amid Central Bank Uncertainty

The Pound Euro exchange rate is rangebound as investors await the Federal Reserve interest rate decision amid uncertainty surrounding both the ECB and BoE’s monetary policy.

At time of writing, the GBP/EUR exchange rate is around €1.1340, relatively unchanged from this morning’s opening levels.

Pound (GBP) Buoyed by Cautious Optimism

The Pound (GBP) is strengthening moderately against most of its peers this morning as an air of cautious optimism is making up for a lack of economic data. With the market mood shifting in anticipation for the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision, optimism that the central bank will make its final rate hike is cheering investors.

However, with the latest economic data pointing to easing inflation, reduced interest rate hike bets could be capping any significant gains for the Pound. Easing price pressures and weakening factory demand weighed heavily on the Pound yesterday and looks to make the BoE’s interest rate decision even trickier. Pared hike bets could continue to keep a lid on Sterling.

Euro (EUR) Undermined by ECB Uncertainty

The Euro (EUR) is managing to shrug off its losses from yesterday, but investors remain uncertain about the ECB’s next policy move. With inflation climbing but core inflation unexpectedly softening, tomorrow’s interest rate decision remains contentious.

Elsewhere, the negative correlation the Euro shares with the US Dollar could be benefitting the single currency this morning. With the Fed interest rate decision being the main focus for markets today, a predicted final rate hike before a pause is sapping demand for the ‘Greenback’.

With expectations growing of the Fed finally ending their aggressive rate hike cycle, the Euro could climb if the US Dollar slips on a dovish accompanying statement from the Fed.

Pound Euro Exchange Rate Forecast: Eurozone Unemployment to Remain at Record Low?

Looking ahead, the Pound Euro exchange rate could see some movement with the release of the latest unemployment figures for the Euro area. Expectations of the unemployment figure to remain at a record low of 6.6%, for a third straight month, could boost the Euro.

Meanwhile, Sterling will be left to continue to trade on market sentiment and could climb higher if the market mood significantly improves in the outcome of the Fed rate decision.
