Pound Swedish Krona (GBP/SEK) Exchange Rate Trades Sideways Ahead of BoE Decision

Pound Swedish Krona (GBP/SEK) Exchange Rate Rangebound on Decision Day

The Pound Swedish Krona (GBP/SEK) exchange rate traded marginally lower this morning, experiencing a minor dip following the release of Sweden’s latest services PMI. Ahead of the Bank of England (BoE)’s interest rate decision at midday, GBP/SEK movement is limited.

At the time of writing, GBP/SEK is trading at kr13.5963, comfortably within its overnight range.

Pound (GBP) Movement Limited as Investors Await Rate Hike News

The Pound is trading in a mixed range against its peers this morning as markets look ahead to the Bank of England’s midday interest rate decision.

The UK’s central bank is widely expected to raise rates again by 25 basis points, and in its monetary policy statement will likely address the issues of persistent inflationary pressures and the cost-of-living crisis.

Economists are largely agreed that getting inflation down to target must be the BoE’s priority, although in an appearance on the BBC’s Newsnight yesterday, the chief executive of the Resolution Foundation, Torsten Bell, acknowledged: ‘The British consumer and mortgage holder is about to get stuffed.’

The prospect of higher borrowing costs could weigh upon Sterling sentiment to an extent but hopes of waning inflation are likely to counter headwinds, while the returns on GBP trading tempt investors. Recession fears nevertheless continue to pressure the Pound: factory activities have been contracting for several months amid waning global demand and a rise in unsold inventories.

Swedish Krona (SEK) Struggles for a Foothold Amid Property Market Slump

The Swedish Krona (SEK) is subdued against its peers this morning, despite the publication of a better-than-expected services PMI.

July’s reading exceeded forecasts of 47.2, printing instead in expansion territory at 52.7. This marks the highest reading since December 2022, reflecting a pickup in new orders and stronger employment.

A relatively bearish market mood does not appear to be lending much support to the Krona either, despite the currency’s comparatively safe-haven status. Neither does a succession of upbeat data from Sweden’s close trading partners seem to have boosted the currency.

SEK shares a positive correlation with both the Danish Krone (DKK) and the Norwegian Krone (NOK) given the countries’ proximity: yet neither Monday’s better-than-forecast Danish employment data nor Norway’s July manufacturing PMI appeared to lend significant tailwinds.

Instead, the Krona may be downbeat on account of Sweden’s current property slump. According to Reuters, ‘property is the lynchpin of the Swedish economy, making up 80% of household debt’; Jens Henriksson, chief executive of Swedbank reports that the market is almost at a standstill.

GBP/SEK Forecast: BoE Decision to Rule Trading?

The GBP/SEK exchange rate will likely trade this afternoon according to the Bank of England’s interest rate decision and accompanying statement.

The outlook on inflation could be a key determinant of whether GBP climbs or sinks. A survey from Citi/YouGov has revealed that one-year forward consumer inflation expectations have fallen to 4.3% from 5.0%; if today’s release strengthens such expectations, Sterling may climb.

Meanwhile, SEK is likely to remain subdued so long as experts remain convinced of the economy’s plight; although risk-off sentiment could lend some support to the currency.
