Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) Exchange Rate Hits Weekly Low amid Anxious Market Mood

Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) Exchange Rate Dented by Risk Aversion

The Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate is losing ground this morning amid a wary global market mood.

At the time of writing the GBP/USD exchange rate is trading at $1.2094, down over 0.3% from this morning’s opening rate.

Pound (GBP) Declines amid Cautious Trade

The Pound (GBP) is slipping this morning as escalating geopolitical tensions fuel a risk-off market mood.

As tensions in the Middle East escalate, anxious investors are avoiding riskier assets in favour of safer ones. The repercussions of the Israel-Hamas conflict are expected to knock global markets, fuelling inflationary pressures. Recent surges in oil prices are an early sign of disruptions to the cost and distribution of core commodities.

Rating agency Standard & Poor’s has expressed concerns of the same nature, warning that the crisis could damage global growth:

‘Even in the absence of a material energy supply shock, the evident sensitivity in energy prices to recent events indicates that some inflationary pressures could persist through the northern hemisphere winter’.

US Dollar (USD) Treads Water ahead of Fed Speeches

The US Dollar (USD) is quiet this morning ahead of key speeches from Federal Reserve policymakers later today.

The US central bank has been notably vague in recent days while addressing November’s interest rate decision. Mixed commentary has left many investors on the fence as to whether the Fed’s rate hike cycle has come to an end.

Christopher Waller, Federal Reserve policymaker, suggested that more data will be needed to consider Fed movements, echoing recent tentative tones:

‘As of today, it is too soon to tell.

‘Consequently I believe we can wait, watch and see how the economy evolves before making definitive moves on the path of the policy rate’.

As such, investors hedge their bets amid Fed rate hike doubts, leaving the ‘Greenback’ trading sideways today. However, the safe-haven US Dollar is still gaining ground against the riskier Pound amid the current gloomy mood.

Pound US Dollar Forecast: Fed Speeches to Undermine USD Movement?

Looking ahead, a series of speeches from Federal Reserve policymakers will take place later today.  Further uncertainty surrounding Fed interest rate decisions could stifle USD movement. However, if the Fed officials strike a collectively hawkish tone, this could boost rate hike bets, lifting the ‘Greenback’.

Also due later today is the United States initial jobless claims data for the week beginning 14 October. The data is forecast to report a slight increase in emerging unemployment, which could potentially dent the US Dollar.

Tomorrow, the UK’s retail sales figures for September are due out. A forecast contraction in sales could dent GBP, fuelling concerns of a UK economic slowdown.

In the interim, the currency pairing may continue to be driven by risk sentiment. If investors continue to opt for safe-haven currencies over the riskier Pound amid escalating atrocities stemming from the Israel Hamas conflict, then GBP/USD could remain weaker.
