Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) Exchange Rate Muted ahead of Fed Minutes

Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) Exchange Rate Subdued ahead of FOMC

The Pound US Dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate is trapped in a narrow range this morning, as important US data releases are expected later today, including the minutes from the most recent Federal Reserve policy meeting.

At the time of writing the GBP/USD exchange rate is trading at around $1.2642, virtually unchanged from this morning’s opening rate.

US Dollar (USD) Trades Sideways ahead of Fed Minutes

The US Dollar is treading water today, after soaring during yesterday’s European session.

The limited movement in the ‘Greenback’ comes just hours before the release of US ISM manufacturing PMI, JOLTs job openings, and later the minutes from the most recent Federal Reserve policy meeting.

The manufacturing PMI and job openings are both predicted to rise. If the data prints as expected, this could aid the US Dollar this afternoon.

Most importantly, this evening will bring the release of the Fed minutes from the latest policy meeting.

The minutes will be scrutinised by markets, as any dovish commentary from rate setters will reinforce Fed interest rate cut speculation.

Lauren Henderson, an economist for Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. suggests:

‘We know that officials do expect at least three rate cuts this year, If we see some more dovish sentiment come from Federal Reserve officials — and they are content with where inflation is and its decline from peak levels — it could solidify at least three rate cuts this year and increase expectations for even more.’

According to CME’s FedWatch tool, markets are pricing in a 70% chance of a rate cut as early as March.

Pound (GBP) Rangebound amid Lack of Fresh Data

The Pound is trapped in a narrow range today amid a lull in notable UK economic data.

Despite the lack of data, the UK economic outlook remains gloomy, which is limiting Sterling’s upside potential today.

GBP investors are growing increasingly concerned that the UK slipped into a recession in the latter half of 2023.

This in turn is stoking speculation that the Bank of England (BoE) may begin cutting interest rates earlier than the bank signaled following its December policy meeting.

GBP/USD Exchange Rate Forecast: Slide in US Payrolls to Sink USD

Looking past the FOMC minutes, the Pound US Dollar exchange rate could see some volatility later in the week with the publication of the latest US non farm payroll report.

December’s data is predicted to show a decrease in employment growth in the US last month. This may reinforce Fed rate cut speculation and pull the ‘Greenback’ sharply lower.

Back across the pond, the Pound may see limited movement in the first week of 2024, as notable UK data remains thin on the ground.

As a result, movement in Sterling is likely to be tied to market risk appetite. If market sentiment improves the GBP/USD exchange rate may claw back its recent losses.
