Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) Exchange Rate Fluctuates near Monthly High

Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) Exchange Rate Wavers amid Data Lull

The Pound Euro (GBP/EUR) exchange rate is fluctuating this morning with both Eurozone and UK data in short supply, as investors turn to central bank commentary in the interim.

At the time of writing the GBP/EUR exchange rate is trading at around €1.1619, virtually unchanged from this morning’s opening rate.

Euro (EUR) Muted following Mixed ECB Comments

The Euro (EUR) is quiet this morning following the latest economic commentary from European Central Bank (ECB) Vice President, Luis de Guindos.

In a speech given this morning de Guindos’ observed that according to the latest economic data, a Eurozone recession may have occurred in the fourth quarter of 2023, stating:

‘Soft indicators point to an economic contraction in December too, confirming the possibility of a technical recession in the second half of 2023 and weak prospects for the near term.’

However, the ECB policymaker went on to discuss that rapid Eurozone disinflation seen in recent months appears to be slowing. Expectation of stubborn inflation could support the common currency, causing investors to resize their interest rate cut expectations.

While markets digest De Guindos’ mixed commentary, the Euro may remain subdued throughout the day. Furthermore, a cautiously upbeat spell of trade appears to weigh on the safe-haven Euro this morning, limiting its movement.

Pound (GBP) Rangebound ahead of BoE Speech

The Pound (GBP) is trading without a clear direction this morning, as investors hold steady ahead of Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey’s address, due later today.

General economic pessimism in the UK has left investors and analysts alike speculating that rate cuts may occur as soon as March, despite pushback from BoE policymakers.

Tom Stevenson, Investment Director for Personal Investing at Fidelity International, argued that further delays to BoE interest rate cuts would be detrimental to the wider British economy.

‘The lag between cuts in interest rates and their impact on the economy raises the risk of an unnecessary recession if policy tightening is reversed too slowly.’

Pound Euro Exchange Rate Forecast: BoE Speech to Drive GBP Volatility?

Looking ahead, Bailey’s speech is in focus. While investors are currently hedging their bets on imminent rate cuts, BoE policymakers maintain that this is unlikely. As such, any convincingly hawkish commentary from Bailey this afternoon may see investors rethink rate cut bets, buoying GBP.

Tomorrow’s release of the ECB’S economic bulletin could drive EUR movement. Investors may look to the first bulletin release of 2024 for any clues towards impending central bank decisions. Confirmation of a 2023 Eurozone recession may sour Euro sentiment. However, should the document report unexpected economic expansion in the Euro area, the common currency may garner investor interest.

In the meantime, the Pound Euro exchange rate may remain vulnerable to changes in risk appetite. A cautiously cheery market mood this morning appears to be capping the safe-haven Euro’s gains, though a shift towards gloomy trade could see EUR firm against the increasingly risk-sensitive Pound.
