Pound Australian Dollar exchange rate rangebound amid data lull
The Pound Australian Dollar (GBP/AUD) exchange rate is trading without a clear direction this morning amid a sparsity of both UK and Australian data.
At the time of writing the GBP/AUD exchange rate is trading at around AU$1.9307, virtually unchanged from this morning’s opening rate.
Pound (GBP) slumps amid UK economic gloom
The Pound (GBP) is wavering today with UK data in short supply, leaving Sterling vulnerable to worries about the trajectory of the UK economy.
In the wake of yesterday’s staggeringly bleak retail sales data from the Confederation of the British Industry (CBI), the Pound remains an unattractive option for investors. After reporting its largest decline since December 2021, further signs of a significantly loosening retail sector served to reinforce concerns about the health of the UK economy.
While economic slowing continues to stifle consumer activity, largely due to persistently high interest rates, the Bank of England (BoE) may be prompted to pull their first rate cuts of 2024 forwards, in order to reinject a sense of momentum into the UK economy. This may serve to dampen GBP sentiment in the coming days, as renewed speculations of loosening monetary policy permeate markets. In turn, GBP sentiment may continue to wane, well into next week.
Martin Sartorius, Principal Economist for CBI, commented:
‘Looking ahead, demand conditions in the sector will remain challenging as higher interest rates continue to feed through to mortgage payments and household incomes.’
Australian Dollar (AUD) fluctuates amid data lull
The Australian Dollar (AUD) is moving without a clear direction today amid a lack of fresh economic data.
A spell of cautious trade is also serving to limit AUD movements this afternoon, pressuring the risk-sensitive Australian Dollar.
However, following an uptick in gold and iron prices, the commodity-driven ‘Aussie’ strengthened overnight.
As today’s session progresses, primary goods continue to edge higher in value, thereby keeping the commodity-linked currency afloat despite gloomy trading conditions.
A lack of economic data for the remainder of the session may see the Australian Dollar left vulnerable to shifts in both commodity prices and market sentiment.
Pound Australian Dollar exchange rate forecast: risk sentiment to drive GBP/AUD volatility?
Going forwards, both Australian and UK data remain in short supply in the coming days. This may leave the Pound Australian Dollar exchange rate vulnerable to changes in risk appetite. As escalating geopolitical tensions continue to rock global markets, a safe-haven dash could see the Pound take precedent over the risk-sensitive ‘Aussie’. However, a spell of cheery trade may see AUD firm against it major peers.
However, ahead of key data releases due out towards the middle of next week, the GBP/AUD exchange rate is likely to remain relatively quiet.
On Wednesday, the latest Australian inflation data is due for release. Economists expect to see headline inflation cool from 5.4% to 4.3% in the fourth quarter of 2023, which may serve to dampen AUD sentiment, with signs of steadily cooling inflation bringing forwards the likelihood of Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) interest rate cuts.
Furthermore, wide expectations of a continued rate hold from the BoE may see GBP waver on Thursday. However, accompanying guidance regarding the central bank’s approach towards monetary policy may drive significant movement.
