Pound US dollar (GBP/USD) subdued amid lack of economic data
(Updated 16:15, 07/05/24) Moving into the afternoon’s session, the pound US dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate has begun trading sideways as a continual lack of UK and US data has seen the currency pairing struggle to find a clear direction.
The pound (GBP) has remained quiet ahead of the Bank of England’s (BoE) upcoming interest rate decision this week, as investors likely hold of placing any aggressive bets ahead of Thursday’s accompanying forward guidance.
As US data also remains thin on the ground, the safe-haven US Dollar (USD) is still being marginally underpinned by today’s souring market mood.
At the time of writing, GBP/USD is trading at around $1.2552, virtually unchanged from today’s opening levels.

Pound US dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate dented despite lull in data
The pound US dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate is drifting lower this morning despite the absence of any UK and US economic data.
At the time of writing the GBP/USD exchange rate is trading at $1.2536, down roughly 0.2% from this morning’s opening rate.
Pound (GBP) flat ahead of BoE rate decision
The pound (GBP) is on the defensive this morning against the majority of its peers as an absence of UK economic data has left Sterling struggling to find a clear direction.
As such, investor attention has turned to the Bank of England’s (BoE) upcoming interest rate decision on Thursday.
Investors continue to speculate over the timing of the central bank’s next interest rate cut, amid some mixed messages from BoE policymakers in recent weeks..
Jack Meaning, UK economist at Barclays predicts:
‘We expect a change in the messaging to indicate that the MPC is inclined to begin cutting the Bank Rate, conditional on the data evolving in line with the updated forecast.’
However, as the ‘quiet’ period is in full swing ahead of the central bank’s rate decision, the pound’s movements are likely to remain limited until the accompanying forward guidance is released.
US dollar (USD) holds steady despite minimal data
The US dollar (USD) is firming against the majority of its peers this morning despite a lack of any market moving US data.
The uptick in the safe-haven ‘greenback’ appears to be linked to a souring market mood.
Later this afternoon, Federal Reserve official Neel Kashkari is due to speak.
Should the policymaker deliver any hawkish commentary, the US dollar could strengthen towards the latter stages of today’s European session.
GBP/USD exchange rate forecast: BoE interest rate decision to drive movement?
Looking ahead, the primary catalyst of movement for the Pound US dollar exchange rate for this week will undoubtedly be the Bank of England’s upcoming interest rate decision.
The central bank is widely expected to keep interest rates on hold. As such, investors will shift their attention to the accompanying forward for any clues surrounding the future of monetary policy.
As markets are currently pricing in the first BoE rate cut to be delivered in September, any dovish commentary from BoE policymakers could see markets reprice their current bets, and in turn dent GBP exchange rates.
On Friday, the UK’s preliminary GDP data for the first quarter of 2024 is forecast to show the economy expanded by 0.4%, rising from a 0.3% contraction in 2023’s fourth quarter.
Should the data print as expected, this could see Sterling sentiment buoyed at the end of the week..
Turning to the US dollar, the latest initial jobless claims for the week ending 4 May are expected to rise on Thursday, which could undermine the ‘greenback’ on the back of a seemingly worsening US labour market.
On Friday, Michigan’s preliminary consumer sentiment reading for May is expected to slightly cool, which could see USD exchange rates close the week on the defensive.
