Pound US dollar (GBP/USD) dips to seven-day low amid shifting rate cut bets

Pound US dollar (GBP/USD) ticks down amid monetary policy speculations

The pound US dollar (GBP/USD) exchange rate is trending lower this morning as markets surmise over the potential timings of interest rate cuts from both the Bank of England (BoE) and the Federal Reserve.

At the time of writing the GBP/USD exchange rate is trading at around $1.2474, down approximately 0.3% from this morning’s opening rate.

US dollar (USD) edges higher despite muddled Fed commentary

The US dollar (USD) is posting some modest gains this morning in the wake of the latest Federal Reserve commentary.

With notable US releases in short supply so far this week, an influx of Fed speeches serve as the core catalyst of USD movement.

Amongst the mixed rhetoric, Federal Reserve policymaker Neel Kashkari’s hawkish stance appears to prevail, buoying USD amid assertions that interest rates may be kept higher for a longer period of time.

The Fed hawk said:

‘There is a limit when we say, ‘OK, we need to do more.’ I think it’s much more likely we would just sit here for longer than we expect, or the public expects right now, until we see what effect our monetary policies have.’

However, a lukewarm market sentiment appears to pressure the US dollar’s movement, limiting any hawkish wins for the ‘greenback’.

Pound (GBP) slumps prior to BoE monetary policy meeting

The pound (GBP) is facing headwinds this morning amid an ongoing lull in UK data.

Amid a lack of macroeconomic releases, investors look ahead to the Bank of England’s upcoming interest rate decision, due for release on Thursday.

While the BoE is widely expected to deliver a sixth consecutive interest rate hold tomorrow, markets will be eager to assess the central bank’s forward guidance, and any potential shifts in the positioning of the nine BoE rate-setters..

David Morrison, Senior Market Analyst at Trade Nation, observed the tepid turn seen amongst BoE policymakers in recent votes, noting:

‘It seems likely that split will continue, but it will be interesting if there’s more than one vote for an immediate cut. That would be a natural step before the MPC has a majority vote for a cut.’

As markets continue to speculate over the timings of the central bank’s unwinding cycle and potential rate-setter dissent, GBP will likely trade without a clear direction for the remainder of the session.

Pound US dollar exchange rate forecast: markets eye BoE monetary policy

Looking ahead, the focus lies on the BoE’s looming monetary policy update. Any dovish signals from the central bank may see GBP tumble against its peers, as markets ramp up their interest rate cut speculations.

Later today, however, USD movement may remain vulnerable to further commentary from Fed policymakers. Fed Vice Chair Philip Jefferson, Fed Susan M Collins, and Fed Lisa Cook are all due to speak this afternoon. Further signs of a dwindling Fed consensus may sour USD sentiment.
