Pound undermined by gloomy UK economic outlook

Pound (GBP) subdued amid lingering UK economic concerns

The pound (GBP) remained rangebound during Tuesday’s session, as persistent worries about the UK’s economic outlook limited movement.

Concerns were amplified by the British Retail Consortium’s (BRC) latest retail sales figures, which hinted at a potential slowdown in consumer activity during November.

Later today, a speech by Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey could influence the pound. Should Bailey reaffirm a cautious approach to future rate cuts, Sterling may gain ground.

Euro (EUR) pressured by French political turmoil

The euro (EUR) stumbled on Tuesday as political uncertainty in France weighed on the single currency.

A no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Michel Barnier looms today, sparking fears of instability in the Eurozone’s second-largest economy.

Looking ahead, the euro may struggle for support if the Eurozone’s latest services PMI confirms a contraction in activity during November.

US dollar (USD) strengthens on upbeat job openings data

The US dollar (USD) faced initial pressure on Tuesday as a cautiously optimistic market mood muted demand for the safe-haven currency.

However, USD exchange rates rebounded after US job openings data for October exceeded forecasts, pointing to a more resilient labour market.

Attention now turns to today’s ISM services PMI. Another strong showing from the US service sector could bolster the dollar further.

Canadian dollar (CAD) climbs on oil price rally

The Canadian dollar (CAD) advanced on Tuesday, supported by an uptick in oil prices, which boosted the commodity-linked currency.

With no significant Canadian data on today’s schedule, oil price movements are likely to dictate CAD dynamics. Continued gains in crude could help the ‘loonie’ maintain its upward momentum.

Australian dollar (AUD) drops as GDP disappoints

The Australian dollar (AUD) slumped overnight as weaker-than-expected GDP figures for the third quarter rattled market confidence in the ‘Aussie’.

New Zealand dollar (NZD) weakens in risk-averse trade

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) also fell overnight, pressured by cautious market sentiment and the knock-on effect of its Australian counterpart’s poor performance.
