US dollar falters as Trump moves to oust Fed official

Pound (GBP) directionless amid mixed BoE rhetoric

The pound (GBP) lacked clear momentum yesterday, with the absence of key UK data leaving the currency drifting without firm direction.

Remarks from Bank of England (BoE) policymaker Catherine Mann added to the uncertainty. Mann suggested she would back ‘larger, more rapid Bank Rate cuts’ if conditions warranted, but she also warned that inflation risks remained tilted to the upside.

Looking ahead, today’s Confederation of British Industry (CBI) distributive trades survey could weigh on GBP if the figures point to another contraction in retail activity.

Euro (EUR) lifted as USD slips

The euro (EUR) regained some ground on Tuesday, clawing back part of its earlier losses as the currency benefitted from weakness in the US dollar (USD).

A cautious market mood also lent support to the relatively safer single currency against risk-sensitive rivals.

However, the outlook darkened this morning as Germany’s latest consumer confidence survey revealed a sharper-than-expected dip in sentiment heading into September, potentially curbing EUR demand.

US dollar (USD) pressured by Fed independence concerns

The US dollar slid yesterday after US President Donald Trump ordered the dismissal of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, raising alarm over political interference at the US central bank.

That said, stronger-than-forecast US economic data helped limit losses, with both durable goods orders and consumer confidence exceeding expectations.

With little fresh data on the docket today, USD performance is likely to be guided by broader market risk appetite and ongoing tensions surrounding Trump’s clash with the Fed.

Canadian dollar (CAD) struggles for direction

The Canadian dollar (CAD) saw mixed movement yesterday. Robust manufacturing and wholesale sales figures boosted sentiment, but falling oil prices and a weaker US dollar counteracted those gains.

Today, oil market dynamics may steer the ‘loonie’. If crude continues to edge lower, CAD could face renewed pressure.

Australian dollar (AUD) loses post-inflation momentum

The Australian dollar (AUD) briefly spiked higher overnight after July’s CPI indicator showed inflation accelerating at a faster pace than expected.

However, those gains quickly evaporated as risk aversion swept markets, dragging the risk-sensitive currency lower.

New Zealand dollar (NZD) weakens amid cautious sentiment

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) slipped overnight, with risk-off trading conditions dampening appetite for the risk-sensitive currency.
