Pound (GBP) crashes amid budgetary concerns
The pound (GBP) experienced a dramatic decline yesterday as UK gilt yields soared to their highest level in 27 years, rattling investors ahead of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s forthcoming autumn budget announcement.
The surge in government borrowing costs reflects mounting anxiety over Britain’s challenging fiscal outlook, while also intensifying the pressure on Reeves as she searches for solutions to bridge the gap in public sector funding.
Market participants will be watching a speech from Bank of England (BoE) official Catherine Mann today, alongside the release of the UK’s final services PMI. Any hawkish remarks combined with evidence of robust service sector expansion could provide Sterling with much-needed support.
Euro (EUR) experiences volatile session
The euro (EUR) gave a mixed performance yesterday, with the single currency gaining ground against struggling counterparts as market sentiment soured and Eurozone inflation data ticked higher.
Nevertheless, EUR’s strong inverse relationship with the rising US dollar (USD) capped the euro’s upside and saw it slip against stronger peers.
All eyes turn to European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde’s scheduled appearance today. Should she indicate that policy rates have reached neutral territory, the euro could find renewed strength.
US dollar (USD) rebounds on safe-haven demand
The US dollar surged yesterday as nervous market conditions boosted appetite for the safe-haven currency.
The latest ISM manufacturing PMI limited USD’s advance in the afternoon, as factory activity contracted for a sixth straight month. Despite this headwind, however, the ‘greenback’ maintained the bulk of its earlier gains.
Attention shifts to today’s job openings data and factory orders report, with disappointing figures potentially weighing on USD exchange rates.
Canadian dollar (CAD) advances in lockstep with USD
The Canadian dollar (CAD) rode on the US dollar’s coattails yesterday, with CAD strengthening thanks to its positive correlation with USD.
With limited Canadian data releases scheduled today, the commodity-sensitive ‘loonie’ will likely follow oil price movements and broader USD trends.
Australian dollar (AUD) struggles despite robust GDP figures
The Australian dollar (AUD) endured a volatile session overnight, initially climbing after GDP data exceeded expectations with stronger second-quarter growth , only to surrender gains as risk sentiment deteriorated.
New Zealand dollar (NZD) slides on market pessimism
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) weakened during overnight trading as negative market sentiment reduced appetite for the risk-sensitive ‘kiwi’.
