Pound (GBP) drifts amid lull in data
The pound (GBP) moved without clear direction on Thursday as the ongoing absence of significant UK data left the currency vulnerable to broader market trends.
Sterling’s performance was largely dictated by shifts in risk sentiment, strengthening against safe-haven currencies when optimism improved, but softening against higher-risk counterparts.
With few major UK releases scheduled today, GBP may continue to trade sideways, influenced primarily by global market dynamics.
Euro (EUR) pressured by weak German output
The euro (EUR) came under pressure yesterday following a steep drop in Germany’s industrial output, which fell 4.3% in August, far worse than the 1% contraction economists had expected.
Although Germany’s statistics office partly blamed seasonal fluctuations, the data renewed concerns about the enduring slowdown within Europe’s largest manufacturing base.
Today’s focus turns to the European Central Bank’s (ECB) latest meeting minutes. Any indication that the ECB has concluded its easing cycle could lend the euro some support.
US dollar (USD) slides after dovish Fed minutes
The US dollar (USD) fluctuated during Thursday’s session as shifting risk sentiment caused volatility in the safe-haven currency.
Fresh losses emerged later in the day after the Federal Reserve’s meeting minutes signalled policymakers remain inclined to deliver further rate cuts over the coming months.
All eyes now turn to Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s speech. If he adopts a cautious tone on the pace of future rate reductions, USD could recover some ground.
Canadian dollar (CAD) tracks movement in USD
The Canadian dollar (CAD) traded broadly in step with the US dollar yesterday due to their strong positive correlation.
Oil prices will likely remain a key driver for the commodity-linked loonie today, with any notable rise in crude potentially offering CAD some support.
Australian dollar (AUD) gains on softer USD
The Australian dollar (AUD) advanced overnight as the weaker US dollar and a generally risk-on mood helped to bolster investor appetite for the currency.
New Zealand dollar (NZD) advances, but upside limited by RBNZ outlook
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) also benefited from improved risk sentiment during today’s Asian trading session, though its gains were tempered as markets continued to digest the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s (RBNZ) larger-than-anticipated rate cut on Wednesday.
