Pound (GBP) advances despite dovish Bailey remarks
The pound (GBP) extended its gains against most major currencies at the end of last week, with Sterling largely shrugging off dovish signals from Bank of England (BoE) Governor Andrew Bailey.
Addressing the Institute of International Finance’s annual members’ meeting, Bailey noted that signs of second-round inflationary pressures had remained ‘quite subdued’ so far.
Looking ahead, the pound could settle into a holding pattern today as investors await a series of significant UK economic releases scheduled for later this week.
Euro (EUR) remains under pressure amid French fiscal concerns
The euro (EUR) weakened against most major counterparts on Friday, as continued uncertainty surrounding France’s public finances weighed on sentiment.
France’s debt problems continue to cast a shadow over the single currency, with investors increasingly doubtful that the government will secure parliamentary backing for its 2027 budget.
The euro could face renewed headwinds at the start of this week following a weekend marked by riots and looting across France.
US dollar (USD) slides following Warsh comments
The US dollar (USD) extended its decline at the end of last week as markets all but ruled out the prospect of a Federal Reserve interest rate hike this month.
The move followed remarks from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who said recent inflation data had not changed his view of the US economy, while declining to provide clear guidance on the central bank’s future policy direction.
The ‘greenback’ could come under further pressure today if improving risk appetite continues to encourage investors away from safe-haven assets.
Canadian dollar (CAD) retreats as oil prices weaken
The Canadian dollar (CAD) struggled on Friday as softer oil prices reduced demand for the commodity-linked currency.
However, today’s Canadian consumer price index could offer the ‘loonie’ a boost if accelerating inflation in September strengthens the case for the Bank of Canada (BoC) to consider further interest rate increases.
Australian dollar (AUD) climbs on hawkish RBA signals
The Australian dollar (AUD) began the new week on a firmer footing, gaining momentum during Monday’s Asian session after a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) policymaker suggested that another interest rate increase may be necessary.
New Zealand dollar (NZD) lifted by improving risk appetite
The New Zealand dollar (NZD) also made modest gains in overnight trade, benefiting from a slight improvement in investor appetite for risk-sensitive currencies.
