Pound rises as BoE hikes rates and signals more to come

Pound (GBP) rallies after hawkish BoE announcement

The pound (GBP) gained momentum yesterday following a muted start to the session, with Sterling climbing in response to the Bank of England’s (BoE) latest interest rate decision.

The bank voted unanimously in favour of tighter monetary policy, with one policymaker backing a larger increase. The accompanying statement also suggested that further rate rises could follow in the months ahead.

Sterling could receive another boost today if BoE Chief Economist Huw Pill expresses support for additional interest rate increases during a scheduled speech.

Euro (EUR) fluctuates despite encouraging data

The euro (EUR) traded unevenly yesterday, with its close relationship with the US dollar (USD) contributing to an uncertain performance.

Stronger German factory orders and rising Eurozone producer prices offered some support to the common currency, although neither release was enough to generate a meaningful recovery in EUR.

The euro faces another uncertain session today, as an unexpected increase in German factory orders is counterbalanced by a stronger US dollar. Meanwhile, an anticipated contraction in Eurozone retail sales could place additional pressure on the single currency later this morning.

US dollar (USD) rebounds as risk appetite deteriorates

The US dollar initially came under pressure yesterday as investors adopted a more positive attitude towards risk following the mid-term elections.

However, the ‘greenback’ subsequently recovered as enthusiasm for riskier assets began to fade, prompting investors to seek the relative safety of the US dollar.

Today’s latest US non-farm payrolls report could prove decisive for USD. Stronger employment growth may provide support to the ‘greenback’, whereas a disappointing reading could leave the currency vulnerable to losses.

Canadian dollar (CAD) volatile despite recovering oil prices

The crude-linked Canadian dollar (CAD) experienced an unsettled session yesterday, struggling to gain traction despite a rebound in oil prices.

Looking ahead, Canada’s latest employment figures will be closely watched by CAD investors today. Could upbeat jobs data help underpin the ‘loonie’?

Australian dollar (AUD) retreats as risk aversion grows

The Australian dollar (AUD) fell sharply overnight as global equity markets came under pressure, with investors concerned that the Democrats’ mid-term election victory could hinder the artificial intelligence investment boom.

New Zealand dollar (NZD) slips as markets turn cautious

The New Zealand dollar (NZD) also weakened during Friday’s Asian session as the increasingly risk-averse market mood weighed on demand for the currency.
